Assam: Massive Protest by Congress Outside SEBA Office in Guwahati

The demonstrators carried placards, raised slogans, and demanded accountability from the state education authorities.

GUWAHATI-  On March 24, 2025, a significant protest was staged by the Guwahati City District Congress Committee outside the office of the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) in Bamuni Maidam, Guwahati. The demonstration was a response to the alleged mismanagement of the state’s education system, particularly highlighted by a recent question paper leak incident that has sparked widespread outrage among students, parents, and political groups.

The protest was led by GC Sarma, President of the Guwahati City District Congress Committee, with senior Congress leader and former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Ripun Bora also playing a prominent role.

Hundreds of Congress workers, supporters, and concerned citizens participated in the march, which began earlier in the day and culminated outside the SEBA office. The demonstrators carried placards, raised slogans, and demanded accountability from the state education authorities.

The primary demand of the protesters was the immediate resignation of two key officials, Ranoj Pegu, Assam’s Education Minister and Chairman of SEBA, accused of failing to ensure the integrity of the examination process. Ramesh Jain, another senior official linked to SEBA, held responsible for the operational lapses within the board.

The Congress leaders criticized the “unprecedented mismanagement” of the state’s education machinery, pointing to the question paper leak as evidence of systemic failure under the current administration. They argued that such incidents undermine the future of Assam’s students and reflect poorly on the governance of the BJP-led state government.

The protest comes in the wake of a recent scandal involving the leakage of question papers for the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinations, a critical academic milestone for students in Assam. This incident has fueled public discontent, with many viewing it as a symptom of broader inefficiencies within SEBA. The Congress party has seized this opportunity to amplify its opposition to the ruling government, accusing it of neglecting the education sector and prioritizing political agendas over public welfare.

For students and families affected by the incident, the protest underscores their frustration and demand for justice.

The massive protest by the Congress outside the SEBA office in Guwahati on March 24, 2025, marks a significant moment of public dissent against the state’s education administration. Led by prominent Congress figures, the demonstration highlighted deep-seated grievances and called for decisive action from the government. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen whether the authorities will address the protesters’ demands or if this event will further escalate tensions in Assam’s political landscape.
