Landslide Cuts Off North Sikkim, Tourists Stranded In Lachen
A landslide near Tarum Chu Bridge has disrupted connectivity to North Sikkim, leaving around 1,000 tourists stranded in Lachen amid ongoing rescue efforts.

GANGTOK- A major landslide triggered by heavy rainfall has disrupted connectivity to North Sikkim, leaving approximately 1,000 tourists stranded in the high-altitude town of Lachen.
The incident occurred near the Tarum Chu Bridge, a key route linking Gangtok with the northern tourist circuits, including Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake. Large boulders and debris have blocked the bridge and surrounding roads, making the route inaccessible.
Officials from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) have initiated clearance operations under Project Swastik. However, intermittent rainfall and unstable terrain conditions are slowing progress, raising uncertainty over the timeline for restoration of connectivity.

According to the North Sikkim district administration, all stranded tourists are currently safe and have been accommodated in local hotels and homestays. Authorities have confirmed that there have been no reports of casualties or injuries.
Local officials stated that sufficient stocks of food, medicines, and essential supplies are available in Lachen to support those stranded for several days if required. Mobile connectivity remains operational but is inconsistent due to prevailing weather conditions.

While access to Lachen remains cut off, the Lachung–Yumthang route continues to be open. The tourism department has advised tour operators and visitors to reroute planned itineraries to Lachung while exercising caution in high-altitude travel.
Authorities have temporarily suspended the issuance of permits for travel to Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake. An emergency helpline has also been established at the Gangtok Tourist Information Centre to assist families of stranded tourists.
Officials indicated that a clearer assessment of road restoration timelines would be provided once weather conditions improve and debris clearance progresses further.
