Manipur CM Inaugurates Seminar on Manipur’s Demographic Profile
At the inaugural session of a two-day seminar on Manipur's demographic profile, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh appealed for an end to disruptive agitations, saying highway blockades are affecting the economy, essential supplies and daily livelihoods.
IMPHAL- Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Friday urged people to refrain from bandhs, blockades and other forms of agitation that disrupt normal life, stating that prolonged highway protests are causing significant economic losses and severely affecting the livelihoods of ordinary citizens, particularly daily wage earners.
The Chief Minister made the appeal while inaugurating a two-day Consultative Meeting-cum-Seminar on the Demographic Profile of Manipur at Imperial Hall, Classic Grande, Imphal. The event was jointly organised by the Home Department, Government of Manipur, and the Manipur State Population Commission.
Highlighting the impact of ongoing highway blockades, Singh said the disruptions have affected not only the state’s economy but also the national economy. He noted that truck drivers carrying essential commodities remain stranded on national highways, creating supply challenges and hardship for transporters and consumers alike.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to public welfare, the Chief Minister said the state administration is prepared to support any initiative that benefits the people. He expressed confidence that the seminar’s deliberations would produce constructive recommendations for addressing demographic concerns while emphasizing that all proposals must remain within the framework of the Constitution of India.
Calling for restraint, Singh appealed to the public to avoid protests that interfere with the daily lives of citizens, stressing the importance of maintaining normalcy while addressing public concerns through lawful and democratic means.
Addressing the gathering, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam said the Manipur government has already conveyed to the Central Government its willingness to conduct a National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise in the state in accordance with constitutional and legal provisions.

He also informed participants that the Ministry of Home Affairs has constituted a High-Level Committee to examine demographic changes across the country. While acknowledging political and ideological differences, Konthoujam urged all stakeholders to work together in the larger public interest and address issues concerning the indigenous people of Manipur through consensus and dialogue.
The seminar brought together senior government officials, members of the Manipur State Population Commission, civil society organisations, community representatives, women’s groups, academicians and intellectuals to deliberate on demographic issues and explore policy recommendations.
