JP Nadda Visits Flood-Hit Areas in Assam, Assures Full Central Support; Chairs Review Meeting
Union Minister J.P. Nadda visited flood-affected areas in Sivasagar and Charaideo, interacted with affected families, and assured that the Centre would provide full financial and rehabilitation support to Assam.
SIVASAGAR/GUWAHATI- Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda on Wednesday visited flood-affected areas in Assam’s Sivasagar and Charaideo districts as part of a three-day tour of the Northeast to assess damage from recent floods, flash floods, and related incidents.
Accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state ministers, he inspected some of the worst-hit villages, interacted with affected families, and later chaired a review meeting on relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Nadda travelled through mud-covered roads, at points by tractor, to reach severely impacted locations including Nepalikhuti (also referred to as Nepali Khuti or Bihubor Nepali Khuti) in Sivasagar district near the Assam-Nagaland border, as well as areas in Santak, Nazira, and parts of Charaideo.
These regions suffered extensive flooding after heavy rainfall, including overflow of the Dikhow river linked to rains in neighbouring Nagaland’s Mon area. He surveyed damaged homes, agricultural land, livestock losses, public infrastructure, and relief camps, while speaking with displaced residents.

The floods have caused significant loss of life and property across Assam, with the death toll reported rising to around 95 in recent updates, and thousands of people affected or sheltered in relief camps in the impacted districts.
Addressing the situation after his on-ground assessment, Nadda said: “I have personally seen the devastation caused by the river flowing from Mon (in Nagaland). People have lost lives, livestock and their homes. We are with you in this hour of distress.” He added that the scale of damage was extensive and recovery would take time, but assured comprehensive support.
In further remarks, he stated: “On behalf of the Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I assure Himanta Biswa Sarma and all of you that there will be no shortage of relief assistance. Complete financial assistance is being extended to the state. Central teams are assessing the scale of damage here. We are fully engaged in rehabilitation efforts.”

Nadda emphasised that the Centre would provide financial aid, compensation for losses, and support for rebuilding lives and infrastructure, with no shortfall. He also praised the Assam government’s proactive and effective rescue and relief operations under Chief Minister Sarma.
Later in the day, Nadda chaired a high-level review meeting with the Chief Minister and senior state officials. Discussions covered the overall flood situation, ongoing relief distribution, preparedness against potential outbreaks of water-borne diseases, healthcare services in affected areas, and longer-term rehabilitation measures, including possible joint Centre-state plans for housing, livelihoods, and infrastructure restoration. The Union Health Ministry indicated support, including feasible relaxations in norms to aid extensive healthcare outreach.
Nadda’s Assam visit formed part of his broader itinerary covering flood and landslide-affected regions in Assam, Nagaland (including Mon district), and Arunachal Pradesh to review relief operations, healthcare readiness, and damage assessment on behalf of the central government. Officials noted that central teams continue damage evaluation to facilitate further assistance.
