Manipur firing: One more injured dies; toll rises to Five

The deceased was one of the 10 people who were injured in the firing.

IMPHAL-  One more person who was injured in firing by a banned organisation in Lilong Chingjao area in Manipur’s Thoubal district died on Wednesday, taking the toll in the incident to five, officials of the hospital where he was admitted said.

PTI reported that ” The deceased was one of the 10 people who were injured in the firing by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) cadres on Monday night”. All of them were undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Imphal. Four others were gunned down on Monday.

The latest deceased has been identified as Maulana Abdur Rajaque Meraimayum, 38, s/o (L) Md Zalaluddin of Lilong Dolaithabi.

Meanwhile, during a meeting with CSOs and leaders of Meitei Pangal community, chief minister N Biren Singh has agreed for ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh to next of kin of each of the deceased persons who died in the incident and a suitable government job each to deceased family in home guard, VDF or grade IV posts. Also, Rs 2 lakh each to those three persons who suffered major injuries and Rs 1 lakh each to those persons who suffered minor injuries.

The state government has also agreed to form an SIT to investigate the incident, led by an officer of the rank of IG.

The shooting was seen as the fallout of a dispute over money collected through illegal drug trade, government officials said.

The Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF), the political wing of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), issued a statement claiming that the gunmen belonged to the outfit and they were holding an internal inquiry into the incident. Both organisations are banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
