Mizoram Grapples with Deadly Landslides and Heavy Rain, One Killed in Aizawl

AIZAWL- Heavy rainfall triggered landslides and rockfalls across Mizoram, particularly in Aizawl and other districts. A notable incident occurred in Aizawl’s Thuampui area, where a stone wall collapsed around 7 AM, killing one person and injuring another at a laborers’ camp.
In south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai town, three houses collapsed in the Lawngtlai Bazar Veng neighborhood due to heavy rain on May 30 evening. The number of casualties is still being assessed.

As of the latest update, one person has been reportedly pulled out alive from the rubble. Rescue operations have been hampered by the relentless rain, making access and response extremely challenging.
An Assam-type building was swept away by a landslide in Mauchar village, Aizawl district, near the border with Assam and Manipur, with no reported casualties.

Two houses in Mamit district and one in Champhai town were also damaged by landslides, but no fatalities were reported.
A wooden bridge over the Tisopi River in Siaha district was washed away due to flooding, and a national highway was blocked by a landslide at Sangau near the Cheru River in Lawngtlai district.

Weather forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) across Mizoram from May 29 to June 1, 2025, due to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal moving northeast.
Lawngtlai district recorded 112.50 mm of rainfall, followed by Serchhip (70 mm), Kolasib (63.70 mm), and Aizawl (63.60 mm) in recent days.
Impact and Response
Landslides and rockfalls have blocked inter-district and national highways, disrupting connectivity. Schools in Aizawl and other districts, except Saitual, were closed on May 30 and May 31 as a precautionary measure due to the unstable ground conditions caused by relentless rainfall.
The Mizoram State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department issued a public notice urging residents to stay alert to avoid disasters due to heavy rainfall.
The state has faced significant natural calamities this year, with landslides since March 2025 claiming at least 42 lives. The department continues to monitor and address these challenges.
The hilly terrain of Mizoram, combined with continuous rainfall, has made the region highly susceptible to landslides. Authorities are actively clearing debris and restoring connectivity, but the ongoing heavy rain forecast suggests continued vigilance is needed.
