GUWAHATI- At least five people lost their lives in Assam’s capital Guwahati over the past 24 hours as continuous rains triggered landslides and widespread flooding in several parts of the city. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed the deaths.
The situation turned grim with reports of landslides and residents abandoning homes in inundated localities. Power supplies have been disconnected in many areas due to safety concerns.

Tragic Incident
On May 30, 2025, a seven-year-old boy was swept away by floodwaters in a drain at Jyoti Nagar, Guwahati. His body was recovered on May 31, 2025, highlighting the dangers of open drains during heavy rains.
The relentless downpour for the past three days has severely affected normal life, leading to massive waterlogging and floods across multiple areas of the city.

Widespread Waterlogging
Heavy rainfall since Monday night, May 29, 2025, has caused severe flooding across Guwahati, submerging key roads and residential areas. Affected localities include Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Beltola, Hatigaon, Wireless, Zoo Road, Ganeshguri, Maligaon, Chandmari, Panjabari, Jorabat, Jatia, Jyotikuchi, and RG Baruah Road. Water levels have ranged from knee-deep to chest-high in some areas, severely disrupting daily life and transportation.

School Closures
The Kamrup Metropolitan administration ordered the closure of all educational institutions, including schools and colleges, within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area on May 30 and 31, 2025, due to the flash flood situation. Some schools faced challenges as buses were unable to operate in waterlogged campuses.
Weather Alert
The ASDMA stated that eight revenue circles across Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, and Cachar districts are reeling under floodwaters. Red alerts have been issued in 12 districts as a precautionary measure.

CM monitoring the Situation
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviewed the situation on Friday and said teams from NDRF, SDRF, and DDRF have been deployed statewide. “We have been monitoring the situation continuously. Over 14,000 metric tonnes of rice have already been dispatched to ensure relief reaches the affected areas,” Sarma stated via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
With more rains predicted, the administration remains on high alert, urging citizens to remain cautious and follow official advisories.
