Mizoram: One held with large quantity of gelatin sticks and detonators

The gelatin sticks were concealed in 40 boxes while detonators were concealed in 5 boxes, he said.

AIZAWL: Mizoram Police on Tuesday arrested one person and recovered a large quantity of gelatin sticks and detonators on the outskirts of Aizawl. The arrested person has been identified as H. Ramropuia, a resident of Sangau town in South Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district.

Mizoram Police officials seized 8,000 sticks of gelatin (dynamite) and 1,500 detonators at Mizoram-Myanmar border Vawkpuilutar area in south eastern Mizoram’s Hnahthial district on early Tuesday morning, a senior Police official said.

The official said that a Sumo Vehicle bearing registration no. MZ 01 AA-3655 belonging to Jehan Lalnunmawia of Sangau sub-town in southernmost Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district was intercepted at a place called Vawkpuilutar by the Police and recovered the explosive items at around 4 AM on Tuesday morning.

The gelatin sticks were concealed in 40 boxes while detonators were concealed in 5 boxes, he said.

Driver of the maxi cab H. Ramropui (24), also a resident of Sangau was arrested in this connection initially for transporting the explosives without holding explosive license. He has been booked under section 5(a) of Explosive Substances Act, 1908.

However, 72 hours police remand of the accused driver is being taken and efforts are being made to trace out the backward and forward linkages.

The official said that the maxi cab was proceeding towards Sangau from Aizawl and the Police do not rule out the possibility of the explosives being meant for insurgent groups in Myanmar as contraband was reported to be transported to Bungtlang village in Myanmar’s Chin state.

Further investigation has been launched to find out about backward and forward linkages by officials of Hnahthial Police Station.

A case of the Explosive Substances Act was registered at Hnahthial PS. The vehicle and the explosive substances have been formally seized and the accused driver has been arrested.

Subsequently, the alleged owner of these explosives Mr. Straliana of Bungtlang, Myanmar was also arrested from Sangau today afternoon itself.
