NH-10 Shutdowns Hit Tourism, Sikkim Warns NHIDCL
The Sikkim government has raised objections to repeated and uncoordinated NH-10 closures, citing major disruptions to tourism, trade, and local mobility.

GANGTOK – The Sikkim government has formally raised strong objections to the frequent and uncoordinated closures of National Highway 10 (NH-10) — the state’s vital road link to the rest of India.
In a letter to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL), C.S. Rao, Additional Chief Secretary of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, said repeated disruptions have adversely affected tourism, transport, and the local economy, particularly during the peak tourist season.

The letter, addressed to NHIDCL General Manager Samrat Sanyal, noted that the frequency and duration of NH-10 blockages have increased sharply over the past year, often implemented without adequate notice or coordination. The lack of prior communication, officials said, has left travellers stranded and businesses struggling.
Calling NH-10 the “lifeline of Sikkim”, Rao emphasized its importance for the flow of goods, essential supplies, and visitors. He warned that sudden shutdowns have severely affected the state’s tourism-driven economy and the livelihoods of those dependent on it.

The government has urged NHIDCL to avoid full-day highway closures during the tourist season and to provide advance notice of any maintenance-related blocks through official and public channels.
Additionally, Sikkim proposed creating a centralized digital platform or mobile app to deliver real-time updates on NH-10 traffic conditions, including diversions and restoration timelines. The move, it said, would improve inter-agency coordination and assist travelers in planning routes.
Highlighting the strategic and economic importance of NH-10, the Sikkim government appealed to NHIDCL to adopt a more transparent and responsible communication mechanism to reduce disruptions and protect the interests of both citizens and visitors.
