Assam: Aaranyak Conducts Biodiversity Learning at Guwahati School
The programme aimed to reconnect schoolchildren with nature through hands-on biodiversity documentation and experiential learning activities.

GUWAHATI- Biodiversity conservation organisation Aaranyak organised a Nature Learning cum Biodiversity Documentation programme at Khanapara Adarsha Lower Primary School in Guwahati, aimed at fostering environmental awareness and reconnecting children with nature through experiential learning.
The programme witnessed active participation from students and teachers and focused on building a deeper understanding of local biodiversity. Organisers noted that rapid urbanisation, particularly in cities like Guwahati, has reduced children’s direct interaction with natural ecosystems, making early exposure to nature-based education increasingly important.
The initiative was led by Aaranyak’s Young Professionals under the guidance of Jayanta Kumar Pathak, Assistant Director of the organisation’s Environment Education and Capacity Building Division (EECBD). During the programme, students explored their immediate surroundings to identify various species of flora and fauna, introducing them to the basics of biodiversity assessment.

Participants were also familiarised with simple scientific field tools, including the use of an anemometer, to demonstrate how scientific instruments can be applied in environmental studies. These activities aimed to link classroom learning with real-world observation and inquiry.
A key component of the programme was a nature journaling exercise, where students recorded their observations through drawings and written notes. Organisers said the activity helped enhance observation and analytical skills while encouraging creativity and emotional engagement with nature.

The organisation noted that, in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha Assam, Kamrup Metro, it has been regularly conducting awareness programmes on water conservation under Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). These initiatives aim to improve students’ understanding of water sources and the need for sustainable use.
The programme was conducted as part of the Mobius Young Climate Leaders for Himalayan Development – North East India Initiative, implemented by Aaranyak in partnership with YouthNet and the Mobius Foundation.
