PM Modi Set to Inaugurate New Terminal at Guwahati Airport on December 20
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new integrated terminal at Guwahati airport on December 20, enhancing aviation capacity and connectivity in Northeast India.

GUWAHATI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the new integrated terminal building at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati on December 20, marking a significant milestone in enhancing aviation infrastructure in Northeast India.
The new terminal, often referred to as the “Bamboo Orchids Terminal,” draws inspiration from Assam’s rich natural heritage, featuring motifs of resilient bamboo, graceful foxtail orchids (kopou phool), and traditional gamosa patterns.
This nature-themed design emphasizes sustainability and cultural identity, earning the terminal the prestigious International Architectural Award 2025 in the Transport category earlier this year.

The facility, developed at an estimated cost of around ₹4,000 crore (with some reports citing the terminal building specifically at ₹1,600 crore), will boost the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 13.1 million – a substantial upgrade from the current levels.
Operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, the terminal includes modern amenities such as 10 aerobridges, 16 self-baggage drop counters, advanced security systems, and enhanced retail and dining options.

The project aims to position Guwahati as a premier aviation hub for the Northeast, improving connectivity to domestic and international destinations, particularly strengthening ties with Southeast Asia. It will also support economic growth, tourism, and integration across the region’s eight states.
During the inauguration, PM Modi is also expected to unveil an 80-foot statue of Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, after whom the airport is named, at the premises.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the terminal’s readiness, stating that all preparations are complete ahead of the Prime Minister’s two-day visit to the state, which includes other key project dedications.
This development underscores the central government’s focus on transforming Northeast India’s infrastructure, making LGBIA a gateway that blends modernity with regional pride.
