‘Mahabahu — The Brahmaputra’ Set for September 11 Theatrical Release
The Assamese film, centred on a scientific expedition down the Brahmaputra and the lives shaped by its floods, will release in theatres on September 11 after its earlier release was postponed.
GUWAHATI- ( By Prantik Deka )- The new Assamese film ‘Mahabahu — The Brahmaputra’ is set to arrive in theatres on September 11, bringing to the screen a story centred on the Brahmaputra River, its unpredictable currents and the lives of people living along its banks.
Produced under the banner of Monarijit Entertainment in association with Louhitya Arts, the film is written and directed by Pranjal Pratim Chetia, who also plays the lead character.
The film had earlier been scheduled for release on June 19, but the release was postponed due to the flood situation in Assam, among other reasons. The director described the making of the film as a challenging seven-year journey, during which the production period coincided with major upheavals including the COVID-19 pandemic and devastating floods.

At the centre of the film is a scientific expedition travelling down the Brahmaputra, with the expedition members confronting the challenges posed by the river’s unpredictable and powerful currents.
The Brahmaputra serves not merely as the backdrop but as a central element of the narrative. The film explores the tension between human endurance and the force of nature while also weaving in the recurring reality of floods in Assam. According to the film’s creators, the story seeks to portray both the character of the Brahmaputra and the experiences of communities living along its banks. Sivasagar forms the primary setting of the narrative.
Director Pranjal Pratim Chetia said the title ‘Mahabahu’ carries a sense of immense scale and is intrinsically associated with the Brahmaputra. He also pointed to the cultural significance of the term, linking it with the legacy of legendary Assamese cultural figure Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.
The film also features the vocals of Zubeen Garg, alongside singers including Deeplina Deka, Shankuraj Konwar, Papori Gogoi, Simanta Shekhar and Garima Kristy. The music has been composed by Shankuraj Konwar, Savvi Sabarwal and Sukumar Dutta, with Sukumar Dutta also handling the background score.
Chetia plays the lead opposite Preety K Kongana, who features in the female lead. The cast also includes Jadumoni Dutta, NSD-trained theatre artiste Palash Pratim Mech, Sewan Singh Yein, Prayash (Kalpa), Gigi Prabhat Dutta, Diyashree and Pallavi Gohain Pathak.

Kongana said the film addresses the major crises faced by people in Assam, including recurring floods and other pressing regional issues. She added that audiences would see her in a different persona and expressed hope that the film would be well received.
The film is produced by Monuj Sangbun Phukon, with Pranjal Pratim Chetia as co-producer and Bidyut Konwar, Akash Duwori and Hemanta Phukon as associate producers. Samir Dutta is the executive producer.
Ripu Kashyap and Raja Gogoi have handled cinematography, while Taposh Phukan is responsible for editing. Choreography has been handled by Ashim Gogoi and Pabitra Borah.
With the Brahmaputra at the heart of its narrative, ‘Mahabahu — The Brahmaputra’ combines an expedition-based storyline with themes of environmental challenges, floods and the relationship between the river and the people of Assam.
After a prolonged production journey and a postponed release, the film is now scheduled to meet audiences in theatres on September 11.
