IWAI Marks Yoga Day with Mid-River Yoga Sessions on the Brahmaputra
Yoga sessions aboard vessels on the Brahmaputra highlighted the connection between wellness, sustainability, and India’s inland waterways during International Day of Yoga 2026.

GUWAHATI- The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) marked the 12th International Day of Yoga with a distinctive celebration on the waters of the Brahmaputra, organising yoga sessions aboard vessels cruising along National Waterway-2 across Assam.
The initiative brought yoga enthusiasts, IWAI officials, employees, and members of local communities together for the observance, combining the practice of yoga with the unique setting of one of India’s most significant inland waterways.
At Pandu in Guwahati, participants boarded the vessels MPT Sukhdev and HPT B.R. Ambedkar, where they performed the Common Yoga Protocol while sailing on the Brahmaputra. Similar programmes were organised at Jogighopa aboard WB Saffron, while yoga sessions were also conducted on board WB Iris and WB Tansy at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh.

The celebrations reflected a novel approach to observing the International Day of Yoga by integrating wellness activities with the inland waterways sector. The events also highlighted the scenic beauty and growing importance of the Brahmaputra as a key national waterway for transportation, connectivity, and regional development.
Speaking on the occasion, Prabin Bora, Director (In-Charge), Regional Office Guwahati, IWAI, said that yoga has evolved into a global movement for health and well-being under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He noted that the initiative was inspired by the vision of Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and reflected IWAI’s role in promoting India’s inland waterways.

Bora said conducting yoga sessions aboard vessels on the Brahmaputra symbolised harmony between human well-being and nature while reinforcing the message of a healthy, sustainable, and inclusive future.
Observed this year under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” the programme emphasised the importance of yoga in promoting physical fitness, mental wellness, and holistic living. The celebrations also underscored the cultural and historical significance of India’s rivers, particularly the Brahmaputra, which continues to play a central role in the socio-economic life of the Northeast.
By taking yoga onto the waters, IWAI sought to promote both awareness of healthy lifestyles and the growing potential of inland waterways as an environmentally sustainable mode of transport and development.
