Parliament Proceedings Disrupted Amid Opposition’s ‘Amit Shah Jawaab Do’ Protest

NEW DELHI- Opposition parties under the INDIA bloc staged a protest march inside the Parliament complex on Wednesday, demanding that Union Home Minister Amit Shah come to the House and answer questions over the alleged police action against student protesters during the July 20 “Sansad Chalo” demonstration.

The march, led by senior leaders including Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, proceeded from the Gandhi statue at Prerna Sthal to Makar Dwar.

Participants carried placards and a large banner reading “Amit Shah jawaab do”, raised slogans, and highlighted multiple issues, primarily the crackdown on students and the alleged misappropriation of Ram Temple donations in Ayodhya.

Other senior leaders who participated included Samajwadi Party’s Dimple Yadav and Dharmendra Yadav, Trinamool Congress MPs Sagarika Ghose and Mahua Moitra, NCP (SP)’s Supriya Sule, JMM’s Mahua Maji, and RSP’s N.K. Premachandran, along with several other INDIA bloc MPs.

The protests stem from the July 20 student-led march organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over irregularities and paper leaks in national exams including NEET-UG, which had affected millions of aspirants.

Protesters attempted to move from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament demanding accountability and the resignation of then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan (who later stepped down).

Delhi Police used tear gas, batons, lathi charges, and other crowd-control measures. The Opposition has alleged the use of pellet guns and excessive force that injured students, with claims of one protester risking vision loss. Police have maintained that force was applied after sections of the crowd turned violent.

Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly targeted Shah on the issue. In a letter to the Home Minister and subsequent statements, he demanded accountability for what he called a “barbaric assault” on peacefully protesting students, asking whether Shah approved the use of “lethal force, including pellet guns,” who authorised plain-clothes personnel seen using lathis, and whether the students’ voices were being suppressed.

He has alleged that Shah was either culpable or incompetent and called for his removal and a Supreme Court-monitored probe. In one post and remarks, Gandhi claimed AK-47 use against students in Bihar and pellet guns in Delhi, along with hundreds of arrests and FIRs.

Other leaders echoed the demand. Congress MP K.C. Venugopal asked who ordered the police action and firing, accusing the Home Minister of avoiding Parliament.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated that India is a democracy “not someone’s royal court” and that those who ordered lathi charges, pellet guns, tear gas, or related measures must be held accountable.

Mallikarjun Kharge sought statements from both the Prime Minister and Home Minister on the crackdown and related issues.

TMC’s Mahua Moitra and others similarly pressed for Shah to explain the police response.

The protests disrupted proceedings, leading to adjournments in both Houses amid sloganeering. Opposition parties have moved adjournment motions and Rule 267 notices seeking discussion on the alleged use of excessive and lethal force.

The government has not issued a detailed response from Shah in the House on the specific allegations in the manner demanded, while police versions emphasise that action followed violence by sections of the crowd.

The standoff continues as part of broader Opposition pressure on the government during the monsoon session over the student protests, education system concerns, and other issues.
