Assam: Ambubachi Mela begins in Guwahati’s Kamakhya Temple

Kamakhya temple or popularly known as Kamakhya Dham is the most important Shakti Peeth out of the 51 Shakti Peethas in the world.

GUWAHATI-  The Ambubachi mela  has started from 22nd June and will continue till 25th June in Kamakhya temple situated at top of Nilachal hills in Guwahati. Kamakhya temple or popularly known as Kamakhya Dham is the most important Shakti Peeth out of the 51 Shakti Peethas in the world. This holy place is a symbol of creation, peace and form of Maa Vasumati in the universe from whom life begins. That is why devotees from far come to Kamakhya temple for Sadhana during Ambubachi i Mela.

According to the beliefs of Hinduism, when Lord Shiva was insulted and disrespected by Dakshprajapati, Sati could not bear it and jumped into the Yagya Kund and burnt her body to ashes. When Lord Shiva saw this, he assumed the form of Rudra and carrying Sati’s body on his shoulder, started performing a devastating Tandava.

To stop this Tandava of Lord Shiva, Vishnu cut Sati’s body into 51 pieces with his Chakra, which fell at different places and each place came to be known as a Shakti Peeth. Sati’s private part fell on Nilachal mountain of Kamrup in Assam, and this mountain became established as Kamakhya Yoni Peeth. Because it is a Yoni Peeth, it is believed that once a year during the Ambubachi Mela , the mother menstruates, that is why the doors of the temple are closed for three days and no worship is done.

Although no one knows when and who started the Ambubachi Mela , but ever since the temple was established, the Ambubachi Mela has been organized here. Because it is a Shakti Peeth, earlier only Sadhaks and Tantrik used to come here to attain Sadhana and Tantra Siddhi, but nowadays, apart from Tantrik and Sadhak, lakhs of devotees reach here.

As soon as the Ambubachi Mela starts, the entire Nilachal mountain resounds with the Bhajans and Kirtans of the mother and this continues for four days. There is no place to stand in the entire temple complex. For centuries, thousands of devotees and pilgrims reach here during the Ambubachi Mela. But with time, Kamakhya temple has now become known far and wide.

Though lakhs of devotees come to attend the fair, apart from them, thousands of saints also reach and camp in the Kamakhya premises.

“During the Ambubachi Mela, just by taking the name of Maa ( goddess ) , one gets so much energy which cannot be described” one of saint said.

Perhaps this is the reason that this year people from the transgender community also come to Kamakhya from far and wide during the Ambubachi Mela and get busy in the worship of Maa.

Devotees tell that there was a time when the main gate of the temple used to close automatically as soon as the woman was menstruating, but today it has to be closed. The most important thing is that as soon as the main gate of Kamakhya is closed, the gates of all temples in Assam are closed and the worship in the temples stops… even the people of Assam stop the worships  in their homes. Such a wonderful example of religion and faith is not seen anywhere else in the world.
