Assam: DC Hailakandi mourns death of Islamic scholar

Noted Islamic scholar Hazarat Maulana Tayebur Rahman Barbhuiya passes away on Wednesday. District administration mourns his demise.

The Hailakandi district administration has mourned the demise of Islamic scholar Hazrat Maulana Tayebur Rahman Barbhuiya, who passed away on Wednesday.

In a condolence letter to his son Maulana Abul Khar Barbhuiya, Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli, while condoling the demise of his beloved father said, “His invaluable contribution for the greater good of society by way of promotion of peace and harmony will be remembered by posterity. His death is an irreparable loss to society. We stand united in carrying forward his message of peace and harmony”.

Expressing her profound sorrow and heartfelt condolences to Maulana Abul Khar Barbhuiya and the members of his bereaved family on behalf of the district administration, Jalli prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.

About Hazrat Maulana Tayebur Rahman Barbhuiya

He was the second Ameer-e-Shariyat, North East. Maulana Tayebur Rahman Barbhuiya was born on 26th June, 1931 at Rangauti, Hailakandi. After completing his primary education, he was admitted in Hailakandi Senior Madrassa.

He secured First Division in Intermediate & F.M. Examinations and 1st position in M.M. Examination under the State Madrassa Education Board, Assam in 1957. He also stood 1st Class 1st in M.A. (Arabic) Examination under Gauhati University in 1971 and obtained Gold Medal. He also obtained Bisharad degree in Hindi in 1955.

During his student life, he plunged headlong in the country’s freedom struggle as a member of Congress-Jamiat Ulema Hind organization. Maulana Barbhuiya actively took part in the electioneering campaign. As a nationalist minded student leader, he vehemently opposed the scheme of partition and worked a lot to spearhead the campaign of the nationalist group in Surma Valley.

Maulana Barbhuiya started his brilliant and distinguished career as an Assistant Teacher (Hindi) in 1957 at Hailakandi Senior Madrassa and retired as Superintendent of the said Madrassa.

He has authored a good number of scholarly works, which bears the testimony of his depth of knowledge on different themes. His works include Tharikhul Ulumil Arabiya (History of Arabic Literature), Nukbatul Adab (Arabic), Ath-ThahkiqatulMufidah (Arabic), Qurbani O Aqiqah, Sadkah-e-Fitr, Ahkam-e-Hajj, Idd O Betarbarta, Nijam-e-Jama’th, Namajer Kunji, Aetakaf, Khajegan-e-Chisth, Jiyarat-e-Madinah, Tarikather Adi Katha, Hajj O Jiarath, Muslim Bektigatho Ayen Banam Sama Dedani Bidhi.

Maulana Barbhuiya was honoured with ‘Efficiency Award’ by the Central Wakf Council, Ministry of Law, Government of India. He was also awarded the most prestigious ‘ President Award’, or National Award by the President of India for his outstanding contribution as a teacher.

As a recognition of his brilliant academic and social status, he was also awarded various other awards like Maulana Abdul Jalil Choudhury Memorial Award, Sarada Charan Dey Memorial Award, Mukta Kanta Award, M. Q. H. Award. The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya conferred upon the Maulana honorary D.Litt.degree

He was a Working Committee Member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board since 1991.
