Himanta Biswa Sarma Discusses Ambitious Health Sector Plans with J.P. Nadda

During a meeting in New Delhi, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma discussed Assam’s healthcare expansion plans, including new medical colleges, specialised treatment facilities and medical tourism initiatives.

NEW DELHI- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday met Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda and sought his guidance on a series of healthcare initiatives aimed at expanding medical infrastructure and positioning Assam as a major healthcare and medical tourism destination.

Sharing details of the meeting on social media, Sarma highlighted Nadda’s contribution to the growth of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam and his role during key electoral campaigns in the state.

The Chief Minister said he expressed gratitude to the Union minister for his support and discussed Assam’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its healthcare ecosystem through large-scale investments and institutional expansion.

According to Sarma, discussions focused on several major initiatives being undertaken by the state government, including the establishment of new medical colleges, expansion of specialised healthcare services, introduction of advanced treatment facilities such as proton beam therapy, and increasing the intake capacity of medical professionals.

The Chief Minister said he sought Nadda’s guidance in implementing these ambitious programmes and advancing Assam’s long-term vision of becoming a preferred destination for healthcare services and medical tourism.

Over the past few years, Assam has significantly expanded its healthcare infrastructure, with the state government prioritising the establishment of medical colleges, strengthening district healthcare facilities and improving access to specialised treatment. The government has also sought to enhance medical education capacity to address the demand for trained healthcare professionals.

The meeting forms part of the Assam Government’s broader development agenda, which seeks to strengthen social sector infrastructure alongside investments in connectivity, education, urban development and economic growth.

While no specific announcements or project timelines were disclosed following the meeting, the discussions indicate continued coordination between the Centre and the state on healthcare development and capacity-building initiatives.
