IndiGo Flight 6E2142 from Delhi to Srinagar Hit by Severe Hailstorm

Lands Safely Despite Nose Damage.

SRINAGAR– IndiGo flight 6E2142 (VT-IMD), an Airbus A321 carrying 227 passengers from Delhi to Srinagar, encountered a severe hailstorm on Wednesday evening, May 21, 2025, resulting in intense turbulence and significant damage to the aircraft’s nose cone.

The incident, which occurred as the flight approached Srinagar Airport, prompted the pilot to declare an emergency to air traffic control (ATC). Despite the challenging conditions, the skilled crew safely landed the plane at approximately 6:30 PM IST, with all passengers and crew members unharmed.

The hailstorm, accompanied by winds reaching 79 kmph in the Delhi-NCR region, caused chaos both on the ground and in the air. Passengers described the ordeal as a “near-death experience,” with viral videos capturing screams and cries as the aircraft shook violently.

The nose cone, critical for navigation and aerodynamics, sustained visible damage, leading to the aircraft being declared “Aircraft on Ground” (AOG) for inspection and repairs.

Among the passengers were five Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs, including Sagarika Ghose and Derek O’Brien, who recounted the terrifying experience. Ghose praised the pilot’s composure, stating, “It felt like a nightmare, but the captain’s skill saved us.” Passenger Sheikh Samiullah, CEO of FastBeetle, shared, “Everything seemed normal until the pilot announced a rough patch. The hail sounded like bullets hitting the plane.”

IndiGo issued a statement: “Flight 6E2142 from Delhi to Srinagar encountered a sudden hailstorm en route. The flight and cabin crew followed established protocol, and the aircraft landed safely in Srinagar.

The airport team prioritized passenger well-being and comfort upon arrival.” The airline did not specify the extent of the damage but confirmed the aircraft remains grounded for further inspection.

Passengers lauded the crew’s professionalism, with many taking to social media to express gratitude for the safe landing.

The incident underscores the challenges of unpredictable weather in aviation and the importance of robust safety protocols. Authorities are now assessing the aircraft’s condition, and investigations into the incident are underway to ensure future safety.
