Iranian Strike Damages Amazon Cloud Operations in Bahrain Amid Escalating Regional Tensions

Iranian strike damages AWS-linked infrastructure in Bahrain, raising concerns over targeting of digital systems amid escalating Middle East tensions.

MANAMA ( Bahrain ) — Iranian forces struck a facility linked to Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Bahrain on April 1, causing damage to cloud computing infrastructure and triggering a fire, according to multiple reports.

The strike targeted the headquarters of Batelco, Bahrain’s largest telecommunications company in the Hamala area, which hosts critical AWS infrastructure. A fire broke out at the site following the attack, and Bahrain’s civil defense teams extinguished the blaze.

Bahrain’s Interior Ministry confirmed the incident in a statement, saying civil defense forces were “extinguishing a fire in a facility of a company as a result of the Iranian aggression,” without naming the company or providing details on casualties or the full extent of damage.

The Financial Times reported that the strike damaged Amazon’s cloud operations in Bahrain, citing a person familiar with the matter. Amazon declined to comment on the specific incident.

This latest attack comes just one day after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) threatened to target major U.S. technology companies operating in the Middle East, including Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Google, and others. The IRGC accused these firms of assisting “U.S.-Israeli terror operations” and warned that strikes could begin on April 1.

The incident marks the second time in recent weeks that AWS facilities in Bahrain have been affected by Iranian actions. In early March 2026, Iranian drones or missiles struck data centers in the UAE and Bahrain, causing outages that disrupted banking, payment systems, and other services across the region. Amazon acknowledged the disruptions at the time and, in one case, waived a month’s charges for affected customers.

Iranian state media had previously claimed that the Bahrain facility was deliberately targeted due to AWS’s alleged role in supporting U.S. military and intelligence activities.

Analysts view these attacks as a dangerous escalation, signaling a shift toward targeting critical digital infrastructure — such as cloud data centers — in modern warfare, especially as artificial intelligence and cloud computing play increasingly strategic roles.

No immediate official confirmation of casualties or detailed damage assessment has been released by Bahraini authorities or Amazon. The situation remains fluid as regional tensions continue to rise.
