Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of BJP in Assam, voiced its opposition against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, in the presence of Amit Shah, at a North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) meeting, here today.
Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora, who is also a cabinet minister of Assam, expressed his party’s opposition to the Bill during his speech at the conclave, however, Shah eluded commenting on the issue during his address.
Bora, in his speech, maintained that the Bill, which seeks to give Indian citizenship to persecuted religious minorities of three neighbouring countries, will threaten the identity of the people of Assam.
AGP strongly opposes the proposed amendment of the Citizenship Act. It will violate the clauses of the Assam Accord. The people of Assam fought for six long years. More than 855 lost their lives during the Assam agitation. If the Bill is passed, it will go against the very purpose of the Assam Accord” Bora added in his speech.
He said an AGP delegation had met PM Narendra Modi over the issue and he had given a patient hearing to them.
Several non-political groups also staged protests against the bill outside the venue of the meeting.
