Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Resigns, Champai Soren to be the new CM

The news comes amid rising political tensions and speculations of legal troubles for Soren. Sources close to the matter indicate that the incumbent Transport Minister, Champai Soren, is set to succeed him as the next Chief Minister.

Hemant Soren, a key figure in Jharkhand politics and the leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), has been at the center of political discussions in recent weeks. There are unconfirmed reports circulating about potential legal action against him, fueling rumors of an imminent arrest. These speculations, however, remain unverified at this stage.

Soren also lodged an FIR against ED personnel over searches conducted by the agency at his Delhi residence on Monday, officials said.

Soren alleged that the ED conducted the search to “harass and malign him and his entire community”, the officials said, quoting the FIR.

“An FIR has been lodged against some senior ED officials… we got the application from the chief minister,” Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Chandan Kumar Sinha told PTI.

The political landscape in Jharkhand has been rife with speculation and anticipation in the wake of this announcement. Champai Soren, a senior member of the JMM and the Transport Minister, is widely respected in the political arena. His imminent elevation to the Chief Minister’s position is seen as a strategic move by the party to maintain stability and continuity in the state’s governance.

JMM leader Alam Giri Alam who was inside Raj Bhawan along with Hemant Soren , said that the governor has said that a call will be taken only after scrutiny of the document submitted by the JMM-Congress-RJD. He said that the JMM has support of 47 MLAs and 43 MLAs were present at the Raj Bhavan. The JMM has submitted papers that Champai Soren will be the next CM of the ruling coalition.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge today hit out at the BJP after Hemant Soren’s resignation as Jharkhand CM. “The one who did not go with Modi ji will go to jail. Imposing ED against Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and forcing him to resign is a blow to Federalism. Intimidating opposition leaders by making the provisions of PMLA draconian is part of the BJP’s tool kit.

The BJP’s work of destabilizing the opposition governments one by one as part of a conspiracy is continuing. What went into the BJP’s washing machine is clean as white, what didn’t go is tainted? If democracy has to be saved from dictatorship then BJP will have to be defeated. We will not be afraid, Will continue to fight from Parliament to the streets,” said Kharge.
