NRC to be Implemented in Manipur; Says Governor Anusuiya Uikey
IMPHAL- Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey said on Tuesday that necessary steps will be taken to ensure the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.
According to a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan in Manipur, Governor Uikey told a delegation of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and United Naga Council (UNC) that the issue has been discussed with President Droupadi Murmu, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Home Minister Amit Shah, PTI reported.

“Governor assured the representatives that necessary steps will be taken to ensure the NRC be implemented in the state and it is just a matter of time. Governor said the matter has been discussed with the President of India, Finance Minister and Union Home Minister and the Center is aware about the situation in the state,” said the statement.
The statement added that COCOMI and UNC representatives submitted a memorandum to Governor Uikey, advocating for the expedited implementation of the NRC in Manipur with 1951 as the base year in the state, reported PTI.
In February this year, the Manipur Assembly had adopted a resolution that urged the Centre to implement NRC in Manipur in order to detect “foreigners.”

Kuki outfits had opposed the decision to implement NRC in Manipur and had held protests.
Ethnic violence has continued to engulf Manipur since more than a year, with the BJP government in power in the state being under fire for failing to control the situation.
