GUWAHATI- The Northeast Frontier Railway ( NFR ) observed World Environment Day 2025 with a landmark celebration at Rang Bhawan, Maligaon, echoing the global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.”
A major highlight of the occasion was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NFR and Cotton University, Guwahati, aimed at fostering collaborative research in environmental conservation. Representing NFR, M. Kalimuthu, Chief Mechanical Engineer (Environment & Health Management), and Dr. Arindam Garg, Registrar of Cotton University, formalized the partnership.

The MoU will focus on key areas such as climate-resilient infrastructure, renewable energy, wildlife protection, and AI-powered sustainable transport systems—marking a significant step towards academic-industrial cooperation for environmental progress.
Senior NFR officials joined the event in person, while Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) and staff participated virtually from across the network, amplifying the day’s message throughout the zone.

Adding depth to the observance, Ajay Singh, retired Chief Mechanical Engineer of South Western Railway, delivered a guest lecture on eliminating plastic packaging from railway cafeterias, sharing practical insights for plastic-free operations.
A thematic drama performed by the NFR Scouts and Guides, titled “Beat Plastic Pollution,” brought to life the environmental consequences of plastic waste. The storyline, centered on a discarded plastic bottle’s harmful journey, encouraged the audience to adopt the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle philosophy.

In his concluding remarks, General Manager Shrivastava reiterated NFR’s dedication to sustainability, unveiling new measures such as:
- Installation of plastic collection bins at 50 major stations
- Introduction of reusable teacups in waiting rooms
- Expansion of biodegradable alternatives in catering services
A short film documenting NFR’s current efforts—like eliminating plastic bottles, installing refillable water stations, and promoting eco-conscious passenger behavior—was screened. Additionally, an Environmental Booklet detailing the railway’s success stories and green strategies was released.
With a thoughtful blend of policy, education, partnership, and on-ground action, NFR has reaffirmed its vision for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future in Indian Railways.
