Heavy Rain Triggers Landslides in Sikkim, Two Wooden Bridges Destroyed in Yuksom

The Gyalshing district administration is actively addressing the crisis, but restoration efforts are ongoing.

GANGTOK- Heavy rainfall in Sikkim has triggered multiple landslides and caused significant damage to bridges, particularly in the Gyalshing district. On July 10, 2025, reports confirmed that two wooden bridges in Yuksom town, connecting Chhangri Basti and Dhoban, were destroyed due to landslides caused by incessant rain over the previous 24 hours.

Relentless monsoon rain in Sikkim’s Gyalshing district has caused multiple landslides, severely damaging infrastructure and isolating remote communities. In the past 24 hours, two crucial wooden bridges in Yuksom town—one connecting Chhangri Basti to Dhoban, and another between Dhoban border post and Samvay Nayapatal—were completely washed away by landslides triggered by intense rain.

These bridges formed essential lifelines for locals, tourists, and security personnel, especially soldiers from the 72nd Battalion stationed at the Chhangri outpost, who rely on this route for regular patrols. With the bridges gone, the area’s connectivity has collapsed, placing the region under a temporary communication and transport blackout.

District officials and disaster authorities are now working urgently to reroute traffic, deploy temporary footbridges, and plan long-term reconstruction. The 72nd Battalion has arranged alternative pathways to continue patrols, but warns that the fragile terrain and continued rain pose significant risks as restoration progresses.

These incidents have disrupted essential communication routes, posing risks to residents, security personnel, and tourists. The affected route from Chhangri border outpost to Yuksom is critical for military patrols, tourist movement, and local villagers’ daily activities. The Gyalshing district administration is actively addressing the crisis, but restoration efforts are ongoing.

On July 7-8, 2025, indicate that a landslide near Sevoke disrupted National Highway 10, severing connectivity between Siliguri and Sikkim, as well as Kalimpong. No casualties were reported, but many vehicles were stranded due to the highway closure.
