SC Issues Notice to Assam BJP and X Over AI-Generated Video Post

The plea argued that the video violates the country’s secular values and incites communal disharmony by vilifying the Muslim community.

NEW DELHI- The Supreme Court of India has issued notices to the social media platform X and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Assam unit on a plea seeking the removal of a controversial AI-generated video. The video, posted on September 15, 2025, depicts a scenario in which Muslims supposedly take over Assam if the BJP loses the upcoming assembly elections.

The video shows Muslim individuals occupying key landmarks such as tea estates, Guwahati airport, and Rang Ghar, promoting a communal narrative that has sparked widespread outrage.

The plea argued that the video violates the country’s secular values and incites communal disharmony by vilifying the Muslim community. Advocates appearing before the Supreme Court highlighted that the content breaches sections of the Representation of the People Act, which prohibits promoting enmity or appealing on religious grounds during elections.

The court, led by Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, asked for a response from X and the BJP Assam unit and emphasized the importance of initiating FIRs suo motu to address such hate speech. The case has been scheduled for hearing on October 27, 2025.

The video’s circulation raised political tensions in Assam, with the Congress party filing complaints accusing BJP’s Assam social media department of criminal conspiracy and communal incitement, while BJP leaders denied the allegations and accused opposition parties of intimidation.

This case underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding constitutional secularism and electoral integrity in the face of divisive political communication.
