Sonowal Slams Congress, Credits Modi for Assam
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal accuses Congress of weakening Assam while crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for restoring security, infrastructure growth and investor confidence.

GUWAHATI- Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday launched a strong political attack on the Congress, alleging that the party had “betrayed and weakened Assam,” while crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi with bringing security, stability and infrastructure-led growth to the state.
Addressing public meetings in Guwahati, Sonowal said Assam’s transformation from a region once associated with instability to one witnessing rapid infrastructure expansion reflects a shift in governance priorities. He also joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier in the day during the launch of the Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) at Moran.
“Congress kept Assam weak for decades… Today, because of the firm resolve of Prime Minister Modi ji and the repeal of the IMDT Act, every Indian citizen in Assam feels secure,” Sonowal said, reiterating long-standing political criticisms of the previous regime.

The Lok Sabha MP from Dibrugarh said peace and improved law-and-order conditions have laid the foundation for development initiatives across the state. He highlighted the inauguration of the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu across the Brahmaputra, describing it as a symbol of improved connectivity and urban mobility.
Sonowal also referred to the launch of the National Data Centre for the Northeast, the commencement of academic sessions at IIM Guwahati and the flagging off of electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme, stating that these projects reflect a coordinated effort to modernise Assam’s infrastructure and digital ecosystem.

“Where there was neglect, there is now nation-building. Where there was mis-governance, there is now transparency and development,” he said, while asserting that the state’s political and economic trajectory has changed significantly in recent years.
Speaking about the Moran Emergency Landing Facility, Sonowal said the project enhances both strategic preparedness and regional infrastructure capacity. He added that improved peace and stability have increased investor interest and boosted Assam’s image as a destination for institutions and industries.

The Union Minister also urged party workers to prepare for upcoming elections, reiterating the BJP’s guiding principle of “Nation first, party second, individual last.” He said development efforts would continue alongside initiatives aimed at preserving Assam’s cultural heritage and identity.
Observers note that Sonowal’s remarks come amid heightened political mobilisation in the region, with infrastructure projects and development narratives emerging as key themes in public discourse ahead of future electoral contests.
