Assam: NDA Government to Take Oath on May 12
The BJP-led NDA, which secured 102 seats in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, will form the government for a third consecutive term on May 12 in Guwahati.

GUWAHATI- The newly elected BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Assam will be sworn in on May 12 at the Veterinary Field in Khanapara, Guwahati, following the alliance’s decisive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and is expected to witness the presence of senior BJP leaders, chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, industry representatives, and a large public gathering estimated at over one lakh attendees.
The NDA secured a record 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, marking the alliance’s third consecutive term in office. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alone won 82 seats, crossing the majority mark independently for the first time in the state. Its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), secured 10 seats each.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, who led the alliance campaign, won the Jalukbari constituency by a margin of over 89,000 votes. Following the election results, Sarma submitted his resignation to Lakshman Prasad Acharya and is currently serving as caretaker chief minister until the formation of the new government.
According to party sources, the BJP and NDA Legislature Parties are scheduled to meet on May 10 to formally elect their leader. The BJP central leadership has appointed J. P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini as observers for the leadership selection process.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony and is likely to arrive in Guwahati around 10:15 a.m. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national leaders, and several chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from BJP-ruled states are also expected to participate in the event.

Officials said the chief minister-designate will finalise the composition of the Council of Ministers before the oath-taking ceremony, during which cabinet ministers are also expected to be sworn in.
Preparations for the event are already underway. Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota chaired a high-level review meeting on May 6 with senior officials, including the Director General of Police, to assess arrangements related to security, traffic regulation, venue management, protocol coordination, and crowd control.

Authorities are expecting significant public turnout due to the scale of the NDA’s electoral victory and the presence of top national leadership. Security agencies and administrative departments have been instructed to ensure smooth coordination during the event.
The 2026 mandate is being viewed by the BJP as a major political consolidation in Assam, particularly as the party crossed the majority mark independently while retaining the support of its regional allies.s.
