Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to discuss defence opportunities, regional trade and Assam's long-term development roadmap.

NEW DELHI- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday held a series of high-level meetings with senior Union ministers in New Delhi, focusing on defence manufacturing, regional connectivity, international trade opportunities and the broader vision of transforming Assam into a developed and economically vibrant state.
During separate meetings with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, the Chief Minister discussed strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening Assam’s role in national development and enhancing its position as a key gateway to the Northeast and Southeast Asia.
Focus on Defence Sector Growth
In his meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Sarma explored opportunities to position Assam as a significant player in India’s growing defence ecosystem. The discussions came against the backdrop of the Centre’s push for indigenous defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The Chief Minister thanked Singh for his support during the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections and sought his guidance for the state’s future development. He also emphasized Assam’s potential to emerge as a hub for defence-related industries and strategic infrastructure, leveraging its geographical importance and improving industrial ecosystem.
Sharing details of the interaction on social media platform X, Sarma described Rajnath Singh as a leader whose experience in governance and public service continues to inspire and guide younger leaders.
Strengthening Act East Policy and Regional Trade
Later, the Chief Minister met External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and discussed the implementation of India’s Act East Policy, which seeks to deepen engagement with Southeast Asian nations and strengthen regional cooperation.
The discussions focused on Assam’s potential role in expanding trade, tourism and economic linkages with neighbouring countries. Sarma noted that Assam’s strategic location offers unique opportunities to serve as a gateway connecting India with Southeast Asia through enhanced connectivity and commerce.

The Chief Minister said he sought Jaishankar’s guidance on how Assam could contribute more effectively to the objectives of the Act East Policy and benefit from emerging opportunities in regional trade and tourism.
The meeting also touched upon broader geopolitical developments and India’s evolving role in the Indo-Pacific region, with Assam expected to play an increasingly important role in cross-border economic engagement.
Roadmap for a Viksit Assam
In another meeting, Sarma met Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and reviewed Assam’s development trajectory over the past decade while discussing strategies to accelerate growth under the vision of a “Viksit Assam.”
The two leaders deliberated on key sectors including infrastructure, economic development, connectivity and industrial expansion. They also reviewed progress achieved over the last ten years and explored ways to build upon those gains to create a more prosperous and developed Assam.
Describing the interaction as productive, Sarma said discussions with Sonowal consistently focus on the future of Assam and the measures needed to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth.
Centre-State Coordination
The series of meetings underscore the Assam government’s efforts to strengthen coordination with the Centre while pursuing a multidimensional development agenda encompassing defence manufacturing, regional trade, infrastructure development and economic growth.
Political observers view the engagements as part of a broader strategy to position Assam as a key economic and strategic hub in Northeast India, leveraging its geographical location, improving infrastructure and growing industrial potential.
With the state entering a new phase of development under the NDA government, the discussions are expected to contribute to policy initiatives aimed at enhancing investment, connectivity and employment opportunities while advancing the vision of a developed and globally connected Assam.
