Assam Floods: 11 Dead, Thousands Evacuated, Over 3 Lakh People Affected
Heavy rainfall in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh has pushed major rivers above danger levels, disrupting transport, inundating farmland, and forcing thousands into relief camps.
GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Tuesday, July 21, with the death toll rising to 11 and more than 3.10 lakh people affected across 11 districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Persistent heavy rainfall across Assam and upstream areas of Arunachal Pradesh has caused several major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Dikhow, Desang, and Dhansiri, to flow above their danger levels. Some rivers have also crossed the extreme flood level, raising concerns over further inundation in vulnerable areas.
The worst-affected districts include Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Dibrugarh, where widespread flooding has disrupted normal life, damaged infrastructure, and affected thousands of households.

Floodwaters have also disrupted railway operations for the second consecutive day, with tracks submerged in parts of Upper Assam. Railway authorities have announced that special trains will continue to operate through Friday to facilitate the movement of stranded passengers and minimise travel disruptions.
Rescue and relief operations are being carried out by multiple agencies, including the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Fire and Emergency Services. According to ASDMA, more than 9,000 people have been evacuated using boats, while over 12,700 displaced residents have been accommodated in 52 relief camps established across the affected districts.

The floods have also dealt a significant blow to the agricultural sector. Official estimates indicate that over 14,400 hectares of cropland have been submerged, raising concerns about crop losses and the livelihoods of farming communities.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that ministers, Members of Parliament, and Members of the Legislative Assembly have been deployed to flood-affected districts to supervise relief and rehabilitation efforts and ensure timely assistance reaches those in need.

Authorities continue to monitor river levels closely as rainfall persists across the region. Disaster management agencies have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, follow official advisories, and cooperate with evacuation efforts where necessary.
The latest developments highlight the recurring challenge posed by monsoon floods in Assam, where overflowing rivers, low-lying terrain, and prolonged rainfall frequently lead to widespread displacement, infrastructure damage, and agricultural losses. Rescue and relief operations remain underway as officials assess the evolving situation.
