NEW DELHI — Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi today led an INDIA bloc “March for Democracy” (also called Chalo Delhi) from the Connaught Place–Barakhamba Road area toward the Supreme Court, demanding an end to alleged “vote chori,” an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Thousands of supporters and activists joined the march. Rahul Gandhi was accompanied by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, AISA national president Neha Bora, and other INDIA bloc leaders.

The group filed a petition in the Supreme Court alleging large-scale voter deletions and irregularities in the SIR process. Petitioners included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, TMC’s Saugata Roy, and others; respondents named were the Election Commission of India, CEC Gyanesh Kumar, and ECI members Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant had earlier declined a direct meeting with opposition leaders, noting that related matters were already sub-judice. Gandhi and others said they were following the court’s direction to file a formal petition. The march faced heavy security, with several Delhi Metro stations restricted and prohibitory orders in place. Parts of the procession were stopped, though leaders reached the court premises.

Statements by key leaders

At a press conference ahead of the march, Rahul Gandhi said there was “one protest — to remove Gyanesh Kumar,” and that the campaign would continue against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He accused Kumar of acting under pressure from the PMO, Shah, and NSA Ajit Doval, urged him to resign and “turn approver,” and claimed Kumar was “unable to sleep at night.”

Gandhi alleged the government was protecting the CEC through massive police deployment, which he said would only highlight the issue to the public. He also claimed contact from officials and that the movement represented a broader public push to protect democracy and the Constitution.

In recent days she has led flash protests, scaled barricades, and been repeatedly detained while demanding Kumar’s resignation and a rollback of SIR. She has described the crackdown as unacceptable and insisted the fight for voting rights and democracy would continue across the city and beyond.
