The Hailakandi district administration held consultations with Shia religious leaders and political leaders regarding preparations for the Muharram procession and other rituals slated for September 10.
At a meeting convened by the district administration with several Shia leaders, Muharram committees and political leaders to plan for the observance of various religious rituals here on Monday, Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli appealed to all to observe Muharram in a peaceful manner.
Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath assured the religious leaders, office bearers of Hailakandi and Lala Muharram committees and political leaders that all arrangements are being made to ensure there are no untoward incidents during the routes of the processions and places where they will congregate.
Nath made a plea to the Muharram committees to engage volunteers who could assist the police in conducting Muharram in an organised and peaceful manner.
DC, Jalli asked the officials of concerned service providing agencies to ensure all arrangements are in place, including drinking water, medical and power.
The police are taking no chances since there is a possibility of miscreants targeting the crowds or even taking advantage of any large gathering to create trouble. “Even a small incident can trigger violence and unrest, so we are on the guard and taking precautions on the routes of the processions,” said a law enforcement official who did not want to be named.
“There will be strict security but the observance of Muharram will be facilitated,” the official said.
The meeting was attended, among others, by Additional Deputy Commissioner, RK Dam and Additional SP, Barun Purkayastha.
