Assam opposition urges President to cancel CAA, warns of chaos if implemented

GUWAHATI –  The 16-party United Opposition Forum of Assam (UofA) in Assam on Thursday sought the intervention of President Draupadi Murmu through Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to revoke the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and said that, if their demand is not met, then they will organize a ‘democratic mass movement’ across the state.

“This Act is not only unconstitutional but also abrogates the historic Assam Accord of 1985, jeopardizing the history, culture, social fabric, economy and identity of the Assamese people,” the joint opposition said. the Center to halt its decision to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 in Assam and revoke this ‘unconstitutional and anti-national’ Act.

The memorandum sent by the united opposition to the President said, “We inform you that if the Government of India ignores these demands, we will appeal to the opposition political parties and the people of Assam to launch a a democratic mass movement to force the government.” There is no other option left.

UofA includes Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Raijor Dal, AJP, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Communist Party of India (CPI), All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) , Shiv Sena-Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (Party like Shiv Sena-UBT), Nationalist Congress Party-Sharad Chandra Pawar(NCP-Sharad Pawar), Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal are included.
