Indian Red Cross Society Assam Marks World Red Cross Day with Monument Unveiling and Book Release

The ceremony was graced by the Governor of Assam, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who also serves as President of the IRCS Assam State Branch.

GUWAHATI— The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Assam State Branch, commemorated World Red Cross Day today with a solemn ceremony that included the unveiling of a memorial monument and the release of a commemorative booklet, honoring the founders of the Red Cross Movement in Assam.

Held on the birth anniversary of Jean Henry Dunant, the founder of the global Red Cross Movement, the event paid tribute to his humanitarian legacy, along with that of Dr. Poal Chandra Duarah and Mrs. Renuka Devi Barkataki, two of Assam’s pioneering contributors to the Red Cross cause.

The ceremony was graced by the  Governor of Assam, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who also serves as President of the IRCS Assam State Branch. Upon arrival, the Governor was accorded a Guard of Honour by students of the Auxiliary Nursing and Midwifery (ANM) programme, symbolizing the discipline and commitment of the Red Cross spirit.

In his welcome address, A.K. Absar Hazarika, Chairman of the Assam State Branch, highlighted the organization’s ongoing humanitarian efforts and reaffirmed its role in supporting vulnerable communities across the region.

A commemorative booklet, edited by Deba Prasad Sarma, General Secretary of the State Branch, was also released during the event.

The publication documents the enduring contributions of Dr. Duarah, Mrs. Barkataki, and Jean Henry Dunant, offering historical insights into the Red Cross’s evolution in Assam. Members of the Duarah and Barkataki families were felicitated as a gesture of gratitude and remembrance.

Speaking at the occasion, Governor Acharya emphasized the enduring relevance of humanitarian work, stating, “In a world fraught with crises, the Red Cross continues to be a beacon of hope and relief for countless individuals. We must continue this legacy with the same compassion and commitment.”

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Deba Prasad Sarma, acknowledging the guests, participants, and families of the honorees for their presence and continued support.

The IRCS is a voluntary humanitarian organization, auxiliary to the government, committed to the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. It provides relief in times of disasters and promotes health and social welfare across India.
