Manipur: Police search in Manipur university campus, 89 students held
Police conducted a search in Manipur university, arrested 89 students, 6 faculty members for agitation.
Manipur police conducted a search in Manipur University campus in the wee hours of Friday and arrested around 89 students. Six faculty members of the University were also picked up.
Police said the search at five boys’ hostel of the University was conducted based on a complaint lodged by Vice Chancellor Prof K Yugindro.
In his complaint, Prof Yugindro has alleged that he was forced to sign a note of apology for disturbing the peace in the University campus when he along with some officials went to the University to take charge of VC on September 20, police said.
IGP Clay Khongsai, said that “the agitators pelted stones at the police officers during the midnight raid Friday. “The officers had to burst tear gas shells to disperse the crowd before making the arrests,” he said.
Khongsai said the students were picked up during the search taken up with written permission of the VC. The IGP informed that those who are not involved in the case will be released after verification.
The Mobile internet services have been suspended in the state for the next five days to avoid circulation of “misinformation and rumours” over the incident. police said.
it must be mention here that ” the earlier VC, Prof Adya Prasad Pandey had handed over the charge of Pro-VC to Prof Yugindro a day after he was put under suspension by HRD Ministry on September 17. Subsequently, the Ministry directed the Pro-VC to take care of office of VC of the University.
Meanwhile, the Congress, strongly condemned the clashes. “An emergency-like situation is prevailing in the state under the N Biren-Singh government. We are not here to gain political mileage out of Thursday’s clashes but this current situation is condemnable,” Leader of Opposition in the Manipur Assembly and former chief minister O Ibobi Singh said.
The Manipur University was in the news since June following agitation by the students and teachers of the University demanding removal of Pandey on charges of irregularities.
