Assam: Man Missing After Being Slapped on IndiGo Flight; Assam Family in Anguish as Questions Mount

The incident, captured in a viral video, occurred while Mazumdar was reportedly experiencing a panic attack during taxiing in Mumbai.

GUWAHATI-  Hossain Ahmed Mazumdar, originally from Katigorah in Assam’s Cachar district, went missing after being slapped by a co-passenger on an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Kolkata on July 31, 2025, said media reports.

The incident, captured in a viral video, occurred while Mazumdar was reportedly experiencing a panic attack during taxiing in Mumbai. The video shows him visibly distressed, sobbing, and requesting to disembark, when a co-passenger slapped him without provocation as he passed by their seat.

Two cabin members were helping him exit the aircraft when a passenger on an aisle seat slapped him, showed a video recorded by another passenger. The cabin members urged him not to get violent, while another passenger protested the violence. The assaulter was detained upon landing in Kolkata.

Cabin crew intervened, and the assailant was declared “unruly,” de-boarded, and handed over to security authorities in Kolkata.

IndiGo condemned the behavior, stating it followed standard procedures and informed regulatory agencies. Mazumdar was supposed to take a connecting flight from Kolkata to Silchar but never boarded, and his family, waiting at Silchar airport, reported his phone as unreachable, possibly left in Mumbai.

His father, Abdul Mannan Mazumdar, who is battling cancer, and relative Zubairul Islam Mazumdar expressed distress over the lack of information from authorities, despite contacting local police at Udharband near Silchar airport. A missing complaint has also been filed at the local Udharbond Police Station.

The family and local leaders in Assam are demanding answers, raising concerns about passenger safety, mental health awareness, and airline protocols for post-incident management.

There’s no confirmation on whether Mazumdar was detained for medical or legal reasons after landing, fueling speculation about lapses in handling the situation. The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with calls for a thorough investigation.
