Assamese Film ‘Goodbye Guruji’ Selected for Festival Gange Sur Seine, Paris

Arunjit Borah’s latest feature to have global premiere in France next month; celebrates education, perseverance, and Assamese folk theatre tradition

GUWAHATI-  Assamese filmmaker Arunjit Borah’s new film Goodbye Guruji has been officially selected for the Festival Gange Sur Seine in Paris, France, where it will make its global premiere next month.

Starring Partha Pratim Hazarika and Aimee Barua in lead roles, the film tells the inspiring story of Prayash Saikia, affectionately known as Guruji, a young teacher who uses unconventional methods to rekindle children’s interest in education at Kinkinia Primary School.

The narrative is interwoven with the mythological tale of Kansa Badh from Assam’s 500-year-old Bhaona theatre tradition, symbolizing Guruji’s struggles and triumphs, and reinforcing the timeless victory of good over adversity.

Director Arunjit Borah described the film as “a heartfelt exploration of the transformative power of education and innovative teaching”, paying tribute to those who inspire change through perseverance and empathy.

Festival president Chayan Sarkar praised the film, calling it a “visual feast – profound yet subtle,” and lauded Borah’s unique ability to merge rural Assamese landscapes with the mystic aura of traditional folk theatre.

Produced by the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) in association with Cinecraft Productions and supported by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, the film features Rupjyoti Mahanta, Rupkumar Borah, Naba Mahanta, and Anyun Kashyap in pivotal roles.

The story is penned by Sanjeev Tiwari, with a screenplay by Arunjit Borah and Maharshi Tuhin Kashyap (also associate director).

The film’s creative team includes Asutosh Kashyap (DoP), Arup Dutta (art director), Panku Hazarika (make-up), Hadwit Baglari (DI colourist), Tarali Sarma (music), Debajit Gayan (sound design), and Rantu Chetia (editor).

Goodbye Guruji is slated for release in India next year.
