Assam: Gyanashree Bora Joins Raijor Dal

Former Goalpara College assistant professor Gyanashree Bora joined Raijor Dal, saying her return to politics aims to promote unity and people-centric governance in Assam.

GUWAHATI- Former Goalpara College assistant professor Gyanashree Bora on Thursday formally joined Raijor Dal, marking her return to active politics after resigning from her academic position.

Bora joined the party at a programme held at a hotel in Six Mile, Guwahati, in the presence of Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi. Addressing party workers and supporters, Bora described her move as a conscious decision to step away from academia and reconnect with public life.

Having served as an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at Goalpara College, Bora said she chose to leave government service to engage more directly with social and political issues. She noted that she had been associated with Raijor Dal earlier as an active worker before entering academia.

During her address, Bora described her political return as a homecoming and referred to herself as an “Agnikanya”, saying her politics would be guided by compassion, inclusiveness, and resistance to divisive narratives. She expressed concern over what she described as an increasing climate of intimidation and social division in Assam’s political life, warning that such trends pose long-term risks to younger generations.

Bora said she intended to pursue a politics of trust and unity, rejecting divisions based on community, religion, or language. She criticised what she termed money-driven politics and said she would focus on issues affecting ordinary citizens rather than electoral calculations.

“I neither have wealth nor believe in using money to win support. My aim is to stand with the oppressed and address the problems people face,” she said, adding that even incremental steps towards inclusive politics could have meaningful impact.

Welcoming her into the party, Akhil Gogoi said Bora’s entry was significant for Assam’s political landscape. He clarified that her induction did not automatically mean she would contest elections, noting that the party would decide in due course whether she would be fielded as a candidate or assigned organisational responsibilities.

Gogoi said Bora’s decision was shaped by dissatisfaction with her academic role and broader concerns about the state of higher education. He also invited public opinion, particularly from voters in the Mariani constituency, on whether she should be considered as a potential candidate. He advised Bora to closely study public issues and maintain sustained engagement with grassroots communities as she transitions into active politics.
