Assam Seeks Central Support for Sports, Energy and Urban Development
During meetings in New Delhi, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sought central assistance for sports infrastructure, worker welfare, energy self-sufficiency and urban development, receiving assurances of support from Union ministers.

NEW DELHI- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the Centre has assured support for the state’s efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure, improve worker welfare, achieve energy self-sufficiency and accelerate urbanisation following separate meetings with two Union ministers in the national capital.
Sarma met Union Labour and Employment as well as Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar as part of discussions aimed at advancing Assam’s long-term development priorities.
Following his meeting with Mandaviya, the Chief Minister said discussions focused on expanding sports infrastructure across Assam and creating better opportunities and welfare mechanisms for workers. Sharing details on social media, Sarma described the interaction as being guided by the BJP’s philosophy of “Sewa First” and thanked the Union minister for taking time on his birthday to discuss issues concerning Assam.

The Chief Minister said he sought continued support from the Centre in Assam’s efforts to emerge as a major sporting destination. The state government has, in recent years, invested significantly in sports infrastructure and hosted several national and international sporting events as part of its strategy to position Assam as a leading sports hub in the Northeast and across India.

In a separate meeting held late on Sunday night, Sarma discussed Assam’s energy and urban development priorities with Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. According to the Chief Minister, Khattar assured full support from his ministries and facilitated detailed discussions with senior officials to prepare a roadmap for strengthening Assam’s energy sector.
Sarma said the meeting focused on achieving energy self-sufficiency and advancing urbanisation efforts in the state. He added that the Union minister assured priority attention to Assam’s urban development initiatives, signalling closer cooperation between the Centre and the state in infrastructure planning and implementation.
While specific projects and timelines were not disclosed, the meetings indicate Assam’s continued engagement with the Union government to secure institutional and financial support for key sectors. The discussions also reflect the state’s broader development agenda, which seeks to combine investments in sports, energy, urban infrastructure and worker welfare to drive economic growth and improve public services.
The interactions come at a time when Assam is pursuing multiple large-scale infrastructure and development projects, with the state government placing emphasis on long-term capacity building, employment generation and regional competitiveness.
