Assam CM Seeks Faster Approval for Silchar Airport

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu reviewed airport projects aimed at enhancing connectivity, tourism, and economic growth.

NEW DELHI-  Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday met Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu in New Delhi to review major aviation infrastructure projects and discuss measures to accelerate the expansion of air connectivity across the state.

Following the meeting at the Union Minister’s office in Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, the Chief Minister described the discussions as “very productive” and said both leaders shared a common vision of transforming Assam into a key aviation and logistics hub in the Northeast.

The meeting reviewed the progress of six proposed greenfield airports in the state at Silchar, Manas, Umrangso, Majuli, Diphu, and Charaideo, along with the proposal to develop a heliport at Haflong.

Sarma said the Assam Government has completed most of the preparatory work for the proposed Silchar Greenfield Airport and requested the Ministry of Civil Aviation to expedite the approval process so that the project can move forward without delay.

Regarding the remaining proposed airports, both sides agreed to speed up the ongoing pre-feasibility studies to facilitate timely implementation of the projects.

The meeting also reviewed the expansion of Rupsi Airport, which has emerged as an important regional aviation facility serving western Assam.

Highlighting the broader vision behind the aviation initiatives, the Chief Minister said the objective extends beyond improving air connectivity. He noted that expanded airport infrastructure would generate new economic opportunities, strengthen logistics networks, promote tourism, and contribute to the state’s long-term development.

The proposed greenfield airports are expected to improve regional connectivity, enhance access to remote areas, and support Assam’s efforts to emerge as a major transportation and logistics gateway for Northeast India.

The meeting was attended by Secretary, Civil Aviation Samir Kumar Sinha, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr. K. K. Dwivedi, and Resident Commissioner, Assam Bhawan, Kavitha Padmanabhan.
