Arunachal Writer Wanggo Socia’s Hindi Novel Enters Assamese Literature
Dr. Barnali Das translates Wanggo Socia’s acclaimed Hindi novel ‘Meera: Ek Safar’ into Assamese, marking a significant moment in the literary relationship between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
GUWAHATI: ArunachalPradesh writer and scholar Wanggo Socia’s acclaimed Hindi novel Meera: Ek Safar has entered the realm of Assamese literature following its translation into Assamese by renowned writer and translator Dr. Barnali Das.
The Assamese edition of the novel was officially launched at the Guwahati Press Club on September 30, 2026, coinciding with International Translation Day. The event brought together eminent and award-winning writers and translators from Assam, Odisha and other states.
The translation marks an important development in the literary journey of Arunachal Pradesh. The source material describes it as a moment in which the literary exchange between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam has come “full circle”—with an Arunachal writer’s Hindi work now becoming part of Assamese literature.

Assamese has historically played an important role in the development of written literature in Arunachal Pradesh. Following the region’s oral literary traditions, writers such as Late Lummer Dai and Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi contributed to establishing a written literary identity for Arunachal, with their works subsequently translated into Hindi, English and other languages.
Against this background, the Assamese translation of Meera: Ek Safar represents another stage in the movement of literary works between the two neighbouring states.
The novel has already attracted readers since its original publication in Hindi. According to the information provided, the first edition was sold out within a month, and the book has now entered its second edition.

Wanggo Socia is a poet, writer and scholar from Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh. He teaches Hindi literature at Government Model Degree College, Kanubari, in Longding district. He writes in Nocte, Hindi and English and has been associated with the Sahitya Akademi, the Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society and other literary organisations.
Speaking at the launch, Socia reflected on his journey as a writer and how Meera: Ek Safar reached readers and became part of wider literary discussions and discourse. He concluded the event with a recitation of a Nocte poem dedicated to the people of Arunachal Pradesh.
The Assamese translation therefore extends the reach of Socia’s work to another major linguistic readership while highlighting the continuing literary exchange between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
At its core, the development represents more than the translation of a single novel: it adds another chapter to the movement of stories, languages and literary traditions between the two neighbouring states.
