Assam CM, Union Minister Discuss Fisheries Growth

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh discussed strategies to strengthen Assam's fisheries and dairy sectors through improved infrastructure, exports, and livestock development.

NEW DELHI-  Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday met Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh in New Delhi and held extensive discussions on strengthening the state’s fisheries and dairy sectors through improved infrastructure, value addition, and enhanced rural livelihoods.

Sharing details of the meeting on social media platform X, the Chief Minister described the interaction as productive and said the discussions focused on unlocking Assam’s immense potential in the fisheries sector.

Sarma said both leaders explored ways to increase fish production while promoting fish exports by strengthening the value chain, improving processing infrastructure, and expanding market access.

“We had a productive discussion on harnessing Assam’s immense potential in the fisheries sector. Along with increasing fish production, we also explored promoting fish exports by strengthening the value chain, improving processing infrastructure and enhancing market access,” the Chief Minister said.

He added that the State Government would work towards translating the discussions into concrete initiatives aimed at transforming Assam into a major fish-producing and fish-exporting hub.

The meeting also focused on strengthening Assam’s dairy sector. According to the Chief Minister, discussions covered measures to reinforce dairy cooperatives by expanding veterinary healthcare services, establishing Pashu Aushadhi Kendras, setting up Tetra Pak (UHT) and milk powder plants, and improving cattle productivity through artificial insemination.

In a separate post on X, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh termed the meeting “warm and productive” and reiterated the Centre’s commitment to supporting Assam’s fisheries and dairy sectors.

He said the discussions included enhancing fish production, promoting exports, strengthening the fisheries value chain, expanding processing infrastructure, improving veterinary services, establishing veterinary medicine centres, setting up Tetra Pak (UHT) and milk powder plants, and improving livestock through scientific breeding practices.

Expressing optimism about the outcomes of the meeting, the Union Minister said coordinated efforts by the Central and State Governments would accelerate the growth of Assam’s fisheries and dairy sectors while creating greater opportunities for farmers, entrepreneurs, and rural communities.

Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr. K. K. Dwivedi, Assam Bhawan Resident Commissioner Kavitha Padmanabhan, and senior officials from the concerned ministries were also present during the meeting.
