A man has been arrested for allegedly duping three MLAs of Arunachal Pradesh by promising a cabinet seat for them in the state government.
The man posed as the personal assistant of an MP and took money from the MLAs for the positions. The MLAs discovered they were duped when the politicians met the MP.
Police sources said that the man, identified as Sanjay Tewari, was nabbed from his residence in Delhi after the politician requested the police commissioner to take up the case on a priority.
The MLAs told the cops that they met Tewari at a function last year in Delhi where he introduced himself as the personal assistant of the MP. They claimed that Tewari offered to help them in any political matter, The Times of India reported.
The MLAs later re-established contact with Tewari following which they asked him for positions in the Arunachal Pradesh Cabinet.
Tewari assured them that he would speak to the MP and asked them to transfer money to him. The three transferred the amount into Tewari’s bank account. But the accused disappeared with the money, reported the India Today.
The MLAs saw their worst fears come true when they met the MP and discovered that they had been duped, the daily said.
After the senior politician learnt that his name was used to dupe the three MLAs, he approached the Delhi Police and requested the commissioner to take up the case on a priority.
It was during interrogation that the police found that Sanjay Tewari was not connected to the MP. The police discovered that Tewari had been in the function on someone else’s invite.
