Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla on Thursday hailed approval of ordinance on instant triple talaq as a “historic moment” as the practice was “anti-Islamic.”
Triple talaq is “derogatory and violates the rights of the Muslim women”, Heptulla said commenting on clearance of an ordinance by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday to make instant triple talaq a penal offence.
She thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his initiatives on the betterment of the Muslim women. “It is a historic moment… The practice (of triple talaq) is anti-Islamic… It will provide relief to Muslim women,” she said.
I am very happy that Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji brought an ordinance to implement the banning of #TripleTalaq in one sitting, because almost all the Islamic Nations banned this unislamic, unqoranic practice long back. It was high time we moved ahead and passed the ordinance

She added that most of the Muslim nations across the world have also banned it and the country should follow it.
On those who have been objections on clearance of law related to instant triple talaq, Heptulla said that “it should not be opposed as it concerns the welfare of Muslim women and those who objects are doing it for political reasons.”
