Mizoram: Assam Rifles, Customs Seize Heroin Worth Rs 17.54 Crore in Champhai

CHAMPHAI– In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Assam Rifles, in collaboration with the Customs Preventive Force, Champhai, seized 2.5 kilograms of Heroin No. 4 valued at Rs 17.54 crore in Mizoram’s Champhai district.
The operation, conducted on May 15, 2025, targeted the general area of Kelkang, a known hotspot for smuggling activities near the India-Myanmar border.
Acting on specific intelligence, the joint team executed a precise operation, recovering the high-grade heroin, which was likely smuggled from Myanmar.

The seized contraband has been handed over to the Customs Preventive Force, Champhai, for further investigation and legal action. No arrests have been reported in connection with this seizure, but authorities are intensifying efforts to dismantle cross-border smuggling networks.
Mizoram, sharing a 510-km unfenced border with Myanmar’s Chin state, remains a critical transit route for narcotics, particularly heroin and methamphetamine. The Assam Rifles, in coordination with state and central agencies, have been ramping up operations to curb the influx of illegal drugs.

This seizure marks one of the largest drug busts in the region in 2025, underscoring the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Northeast India.
A senior Assam Rifles official stated, “This operation reflects our unwavering commitment to disrupting drug smuggling networks and ensuring a drug-free region.” The force has conducted 21 operations since January 2025, seizing contraband worth over Rs 95 crore across the Northeast.
The seizure has drawn praise on social media, with netizens lauding the Assam Rifles’ efforts to combat the drug menace. Authorities continue to urge citizens to report suspicious activities to aid in the fight against narcotics smuggling.
