Assam: Renowned Assamese Singer Gayatri Hazarika Passes Away at 44

She died at 2:15 PM on Friday at Nemcare Hospital, Guwahati, where she had been undergoing treatment.

GUWAHATI-  The Assamese music industry has been struck by grief following the untimely demise of celebrated singer and lyricist Gayatri Hazarika, who passed away at the age of 44 after a prolonged battle with colon cancer. She died at 2:15 PM on Friday at Nemcare Hospital, Guwahati, where she had been undergoing treatment.

Hazarika rose to prominence with her iconic rendition of Xora Pate Pate Phagun Naame, a song that became a hallmark of Assamese musical heritage. Known for her emotive vocal expression and deep connection with listeners, her contributions spanned decades and earned her an enduring place in the hearts of fans and peers alike. Her fan base, while deeply rooted in her home state, extended nationally through music streaming platforms like Wynk Music and Gaana, where her soulful discography remains accessible and beloved.

Hospital director Dr. Hitesh Baruah confirmed that Hazarika was admitted three days prior and shifted to the ICU the day before her passing due to a deterioration in her condition.

Tributes have poured in from all quarters. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), stating:

“Deeply saddened by the demise of renowned singer Smt. Gayatri Hazarika. Her soulful voice and enduring contributions to Assamese music will forever be remembered.”

Other political leaders, including Agriculture Minister Atul Bora and Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika, also mourned the loss, describing her as “a voice that touched countless hearts.”

Fans across Assam and beyond took to social media to express their sorrow, reminiscing about the songs that marked milestones in their lives.

Her final rites are expected to be held in Guwahati, with arrangements to be announced by her family. Gayatri Hazarika leaves behind a rich legacy of music that will inspire future generations.
