JALPAIGURI ( West Bengal )- A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Jalpaiguri’s Mainaguri block on Monday, where Sima Bawali, a poverty-stricken mother, allegedly attempted to drown her one-and-a-half-year-old son in the swollen Teesta River.
The desperate act was reportedly triggered by the family’s dire financial situation, with no food left at home to feed her crying toddler.
Sima, a resident of Marichbari near the Teesta River, lives with her husband, Bipul Bawali, a carpenter, and their three-year-old daughter.

On the morning of the incident, the couple reportedly had no food in their home, leading to an argument. Overwhelmed by her son’s cries and their inability to provide, Sima took the drastic step of throwing her toddler into the river.
Swift action by three local residents—Pallabi Kirtania, Mallika Pal, and Bishuka Pattadar—saved the child’s life. The trio, who were nearby, rescued the boy from the river’s currents.

Police arrived at the scene and counseled Sima and Bipul, urging them not to repeat such an act. No formal charges have been reported, as authorities are treating the incident as a consequence of extreme poverty and emotional distress.
