Assam: Swachh Survekshan Gramin begins in Hailakandi district

Swachh Survekshan Gramin 2018 has begun in Hailakandi district of Assam in right earnest.

Flagging off Swachhata Raths (mechanised vehicles) to ceremonially kick off the month-long cleanliness programme in Hailakandi district at a function held at his office premises Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan called upon the officials of Public Health Engineering department and all stakeholders to contribute their mite to make Hailakandi the cleanest district of the country. “Encouraging large scale participation and creating awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities a better place to live in is the objective of the survey,” he said.

Terming the Swachh Survekshan as a biggest campaign launched by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Khan said an independent agency empanelled by Government of India to conduct surveys on a comprehensive set of parameters on the basis of which rankings would be given to all districts and states across India.

Organised by the District Water and Sanitation Committee under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Gramin), the month-long cleanliness campaign will witness a host of activities that will primarily focus on schools, anganwadis, health centres, haat-bazaars and religious places. “We will cover the schools, anganwadi centres, health institutions as well as other places through intensive awareness campaigns such as rallies, workshops, dance, songs and drama involving all stakeholders in the days ahead,” said Executive Engineer of Public Health Engineering cum Member Secretary of District Water and Sanitation Committee, AB Choudhury.

The best performing states, districts and villages will be awarded the ‘Swachh Survekshan Gramin Puraskar’ at a function scheduled to be held in New Delhi on October 2 8 coinciding with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Meanwhile, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, District Youth Coordinator, Hailakandi is also observing Swachhata Pakhwada, an intensive cleanliness and hygiene fortnight campaign under the Swachh Bharat Mission across the district. A pledge taking ceremony was organised at his office premises on Wednesday to inspire the youth to take the lead in the cleanliness campaign.
