Assam: Death in custody triggers violence in Dhula, Curfew imposed

Curfew clamped in Dhula area of Darang district of Assam on Wednesday to control a violence erupted following the death of a person in the police custody.
Angry locals blocked the 15th National Highway in front of Dhula police station, burnt tires and damaged vehicles to protest against the incident. The protesters also pelted stones to the police which forced them to open fire and lathi-charge to control the mob.
Several protesters were injured during the situation and lead to the death of one while being taken to the hospital. The deceased has been identified as Moidul Islam.
The Protest erupted after a convict, Hasen Ali died in police custody. The deceased was detained on charges of possessing illegal arms, who fell sick and later took his last breath.
Meanwhile, Ali’s family alleged that he died in police custody due to torture by police in Dhula Police station. On the other hand, the OC of Dhula police station, Ranjit Hazarika was suspended for his alleged role in the incident.
