Hailakandi has jumped to 52 position among the aspirational districts of India, according to the latest Delta rankings released by NITI Aayog.
In the championsofchange.gov.in portal of the NITI Aayog, Hailakandi has been given 52 ranking among the 111 aspirational districts of India, as per the survey conducted in the month of December 2018.
Among the seven aspirational districts of Assam, Hailakandi ranks No.1 followed by Dhubri (73 position), Goalpara (76), Udalguri (77), Darrang (82), Baksa (89) and Barpeta (94).
It may be mentioned that Hailakandi district was put at the bottom rung of the aspirational districts among the least improved districts in the second Delta ranking conducted in June-October 2018. The then Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan (now posted as DC Bongaigaon) dashed off a letter to CEO, NITI Aayog, Amitabh Kant, for his intervention to put things in proper perspective vis-a-vis rectify the mismatch in official data and that of the data collected by TATA Trusts during its field survey.
Khan even during the high level meeting with officials of NITI Aayog and TATA Trusts in January in Hailakandi convinced them there was a mismatch in data resulting in sharp fall in ranking of Hailakandi putting it in the least developed districts category. Khan pointed out that proper survey was not possible as most parts of the district were reeling under flood in June.
Following Khan’s matter-of-fact submission, NITI Aayog not only removed Hailakandi district from the least improved category tag but also gave 52nd ranking in its latest Delta report based on improvement in several key development indicators such as health and nutrition, education, agriculture and water resources and basic infrastructure.
Welcoming the latest development, officials of the district administration said it would augur well for Hailakandi, as the aspirational district continues its onward march towards development under the stewardship of new Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli. Jalli has set her list of priorities and, among them, focusing on development and weeding out corruption are at the topmost.
