Assam: Water Supply Pipe Burst in Guwahati, govt forms committee to probe the incident
The committee will submit its report within three days.
GUWAHATI: The Assam government on Friday constituted a three-member committee to investigate the incident in which a water supply pipe in Guwahati burst, leading to the death of a woman and injuries to five people.
The committee will be headed by Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Pabitra Ram Khaund, while the other two members are retired secretary of Public Health Engineering Ramendra Sundar Choudhury and Irrigation Department’s retired chief engineer Sanjai Kumar Mahanta, according to a notification.
The committee will submit its report within three days.

As per reports, the pipeline burst due to the high pressure of the water. Almost 40 to 50 houses and several vehicles including cars and two wheelers were damaged in this incident. It was a very massive water gush. In the burst, a woman lost her life.

A day after the incident Assam’s Cabinet Ministers Ashok Singhal in charge of the Guwahati Development Department, reached the location on Thursday and tweeted that he has ordered a “strict inquiry in this matter.”
The Minister also interacted with a few locals who had been injured in the incident.

Agriculture Minister Atul Bora also reached Kharguli to take stock of the situation. Bora interacted with locals who had incurred losses in the tragedy.
Congress leader Bobbeeta Sharma Visited the incident site and met the affected families. She alleged that “ it is a man made disaster and there is no excuse for it. And this is not the only incident. When previous such incidents had happened why were precautions not taken. This incident exposes the lackadaisical attitude of the Department of GMDA on the whole project and precautions that need to be taken in handling such a project” .
After the incident, the affected people have expressed anger and disappointment. They are demanding adequate compensation from GMDA to compensate for the huge damage caused to their properties.

Meanwhile, The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) took suo motu cognisance of the incident, and directed the Kamrup Metro district magistrate to conduct an inquiry into the incident, which happened on Thursday.
It directed that the inquiry report must be submitted at the earliest, AHRC member Santanu Bharali said in a statement. The actual cause of the incident is still not known and the district magistrate must examine all the aspects connected to it, he said.
The district magistrate must mention in the report the names and addresses of the deceased and injured persons, and details of the damaged vehicles, houses and business establishments, the AHRC said.
